Ending on a Good Note

Much of what has happened on this blog was from the creative mind I could muster up with an approaching deadline. As with everything to exist, nothing is complete without an ending. Perhaps the ending is a start of a new venture out in the virtual realm, a way to discover passion. This blog is the one outlet to bounce ideas off of and to keep on being better. Here’s what I’ve gotten from Coffee Shop Talk.

First, I’m going to start off with the numerical data to get a sense of how wildly popular this blog is.

The Scoop

Following the natural curve, the week of February 17th, was my most popular week. My first post got the most attention in the beginning because I was still promoting my website with the introductory post about Coffee Shop Talk. In that week, I amassed 28 viewers and since then has grown to 44 by today, May 10th. Any potential viewers would have to read what even this blog is about to decide whether or not this blog is for them.

In total, I’ve gotten 93 visitors and 272 views on my site. I think that’s fine, as I appreciate everyone who has taken the time out of their day to read some lines about a song or two. I mainly used Twitter as my main promoter since it’s really easy to gain views with their social media platform style. Native functions that make Twitter easy to network were most definitely the retweets. I wish I could have had a well developed Instagram page to help with relationship building with local coffee shops and really invested viewers.

I also had some viewers from China which I have no clue as to why but if you’re in China reading this blog, hello and thank you for reading this. I hope we can overcome a language barrier and one day talk about your own favorite music! I think it’s fine if the four people from China see this, in fact it means that the internet does its job by connecting people all over the world. Thanks internet.

Speaking of reaching people, the highlight of the blog was getting noticed by the band I wrote about! The day after I posted that blog, I got a notification saying they liked the tweet, which was unexpected but rewarding. It means people are paying attention to what’s written about them (a crazy concept, huh?). Thank you!

Potential

It’s a better way to lay it down in blunt terms instead of the “maybes” and “almosts”. I’m not saying that this idea wasn’t enough, but it has sparked fuel for myself to work on other projects in the digital world. It gives me the feeling of authenticity so I can create better content.

I know from talking to friends and classmates that this was a pretty interesting idea. But, I only got one person that wanted to be part of Coffee Shop Talk which was underwhelming due to the outcome that I first constructed. I had to work around that and potentially scrap the whole idea. However, I will say that the one person I met with was enough for me to realize that the show must go on.

In the perfect world, I would have wanted an array of different faces and stories.

If I do this again or similarly, I would simply seek out those people and put it in an issue. Utilizing social media is crucial for promotion but the human to human intimacy is what sells the idea. I want to meet those members in my community and hopefully gain social capital that way. It’s also important to me that I develop great story writing skills and refine my writing style to give my readers great tales. Perhaps capitalize off the idea to make a career out of it. Ventures can run wild in the west.

The way media is always evolving, I would have to do the same. Coffee Shop Talk could be a web video series, blog and physical issue. I could definitely see this in popularity for the right crowd, as it happened for the Minimalist.

Moving forward from this, I think I finally got the hang of these things. I did this for a class assignment and there’s nothing wrong with being transparent about that. But ideas must have came from somewhere that makes it on what new media companies to read upon. I can use this experience to iron out what went wrong and focus on what went right.

I continuously remind everyone of Covid-19 related issues as it has unsettled seemingly permanent day to day life. It was rough having to think of ideas and content when I couldn’t (and still shouldn’t) meet with people in public. Until recently, all businesses were closed unless essential. If they weren’t closed, I could only be six feet away from everyone. Not ideal for the blog. Nonetheless, stay safe and keep evolving into your own best self. Listen to some albums I’ve written about or discover new artists. Let me know where they take you.

A New Summer Under the Sun

As the spring heats up for summer, it’s out with the old and in with the better version. Whether that’s cruising beachside in a new convertible or growing from the past, Téo welcomes all nuances with his album ”¿Téo?”, his freshman album.

Using Latin American musical influences, he sings nonlinear stories about a woman that meant much to him but has since ended. Té0’s most popular song, “Uno Dos” featuring Jaden (Smith), is an example of the timeless moments spent in love. Soaring through the air feeling on top of the world is how anyone would want to spend summertime!

However, that’s the lighter side of the journey with the partner. In “Part of Me”, it’s revealed there was a mistake on his part for which Téo felt atonement by embracing the outcome; the two having to separate. I think this is the best part of the album’s theme. Yes, one can be sorry for what they have done. The more important piece is what’s best for themselves. In these types of “sad” songs, usually the singer cannot function without their love interest. “Part of Me” reconciles with the fact that one has to accept the judicatory-like sentence of letting the person go.

I’ve always been a big fan of interludes in albums because they can be huge parts of the story being told. Time can pass, a phone call giving background information or simply just keeping you in tune just for a minute makes all the difference. “Unitedpalace (Interlude)” passes through time, seasons and people. It may very well be a metaphor of some sort, a song so short can pass time if you let it.

My favorite track is “Belong in the Sun”. The perfect day in a field or beach enjoying what Earth has to offer would be the best time to listen to this song. I am a lover of nature, there’s nothing more filling than to see the sun rays beam onto the life that blooms in light. Maybe the person I think about is allowed to run through my mind on a sunny day, there’s nothing wrong with that. But to belong to the sun is to gravitate toward the energy that gives life. We feel it on our skin immediately, almost like the time we see someone for the first time and we feel it in our gut.

I think quarantine is the perfect opportunity to try and embrace change for the greater good. In all of the different elements of the human experience, change will always be how we get through it. I challenge you to listen to the album and find what changes are going on and how you can accept them as part of growing.

Does Mateo Arias’ name sound familiar? It might be because he is the younger brother of Moises Arias, the Hannah Montana child star, Rico! This article gives more to read about their come up in the industry.

The Struggles of Sneaky Lowridin’ Slugs

I will always commend artists that express themselves in the most authentic way possible, regardless of what others think. The experimental punk rock duo, Wyatt and Fletcher Shears have done exactly that for years, but most recently with their latest album release “Kiss My Super Bowl Ring”.

The Garden worked with Khalif Jones (formerly “Le1f” when I saw them tour together) and Ariel Pink on two separate tracks, a first for the band to have features on a studio album release. Fortunately, the features work well only if you don’t mind the mix of musically diverse artists.

A quick disclaimer, this kind of music is usually the kind to scare the common folk away. I urge anyone to give it a chance, there’s a lot of twist and turns within some tracks that are actually pleasing. Tread with caution however.

“Clench To Stay Awake” was the first track to be released as a single that set the tone and concept art of eerie green imagery. On The Garden’s Instagram page, the promotion for the album has some odd skits. Perhaps the goblin is the one knocking at the door, ensuring you stay awake to avoid them in your sleep.

Throughout the album, the duo definitely have outrage to release in some way or form. In “A Struggle” the sublime meets both nostalgic drum kicks and the new anger that The Garden has found themselves encompassed in. Reflecting in a mirror, we may face tribulations but to call it struggling… Well it may be, if you wanna call it that.

If I come off as a problem, kiss my super bowl ring

If you got a big ego, kiss my super bowl ring

The Garden, Kiss My Super Bowl Ring. Epitaph Records, 2020.

As mentioned before in an interview with Spin, the title of the interview really says it all; The Garden doesn’t care if you like their album, you can simply kiss their super bowl ring (another way of saying kiss my ass). In the album named song, it seems being fed up with everything lead the twins to say “forget it, it doesn’t matter”. Are you yourself tired of the messed up world? Tired of people in power? Tired of carbon footprints? No worries, just turn this track on full.

It isn’t always a bleak album with hopeless themes, as there are some funky surfer kicks and snares to muddle out the dread. “AMPM Truck” animates a deadly vehicle experience with a cool sound that reminds you of riding sick waves, if you could. But always beware on the road!

My personal favorite track is number five, “A Fool’s Expedition”. Every time I listen to it, I always imagine myself riding into a battle on a stallion with an army fighting for the greater good. This is one of the more heavy songs that induced deep thought about what truly matters. In the mirror, you can only point at yourself for what you’ve done and who you are. Perhaps the song is telling us to ask ourselves what matters the most for our own sake.

This album has its pros and cons, but this is not a review. I don’t believe in slapping a number out of ten and calling it a day. In fact, that’s the most frustrating practice in music today. I’m a fan of The Garden, I have that bias already. But take this as what I think of when listening to the album. If my mother were to listen to it, I’m sure she would give it a zero for such language and overbearing synths. But hey, if you disagree with me just go ahead and kiss my super bowl ring! (Haha)

As one of my favorite bands cancels their tour due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I’m still thankful to be able to stream and wear the album in the midst of missing their concert. Stay safe, healthy and stream the album below!

A Review: Memoir Mixtapes

Everyone has a story; a story with exposition, main characters, conflict, action, and are told in chapters, volumes, novels and series. What humans do with their stories are expressed in sonnets, films, books, folktales and through generations of spoken word. Dancing alongside expression, music has coexisted with the art of story telling since ancient times to modern day. What better a way to give these personal accounts a way to be shared with the world than to publish them!

Memoir Mixtapes is a volunteer-ran blog that reviews submissions of personal poetry and prose paired with a song or an album for their “every-so-monthly” issue. Every issue has a different theme. Their latest issue available is Vol.10: Ballads & Breakups, about (you guessed it) what could have been, what was and how love changes over time.

My favorite themes were Ballads and Breakups and Vol.4: Anthems. Many of them included songs from artists like Pink Floyd, Lana Del Rey, Selena and many more that spring from all across genres. That’s the privilege of being part of the most diverse world yet, the ability to read a collection of backgrounds and stories from the saturated cultures we come from.

In blunt terms, Memoir Mixtape has allowed a space for all of these stories to come as one.

Aside from the magazines, there are a couple other endeavors on the site. Deep Cuts would be the little sister to the magazine, featuring excerpts, poems and short(er) stories that wouldn’t necessarily fit in the issues. Ranging from a curious Spotify open letter to song recommendations during self-isolation, there is not bounds when it comes to Deep Cuts.

Speaking of song recommendations, Memoir Mixtapes also hosts a dedicated tab to song recommendations from fellow students. This is partly influenced by certain teachers who have integrated the website in their own curriculum. It’s a great way to spark potential interest of writing to aspiring novels in the years to come.

It is a simple project with a goal that continues to evolve with time. With the right resources and funding, there’s no telling where the project could go. The downside of a lack of opportunity and funds means that we can only see the potential. However, their dedication does not go unnoticed.

Being mindful of everyone’s past is the most cautious people can be when confronted with people that are different than themselves. In addition, it’s also the most important habit to form. Sharing art comes with a subjective degree of vulnerability and empowerment; both of which can’t thrive without the other.

The Memoir Mixtape Project is one that deserves recognition and contributors for issues to come.

Concerts, Coronavirus and Coffee Shop Talk, a Conversation

Most of the talk in the world lately has been around the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus has singlehandedly put daily life on hold in all aspects. From schools shutting down and issuing quarantines to unemployment, dynamics of living is on an interim for the foreseeable future.

For some weeks now, the public has now become homebound for their safety. Public spaces are empty and unable to operate due to the risk Covid-19 presents. Local businesses have shut down if they are not necessary for society. Corporation chains are also enforcing stricter policies regarding social distancing and operating hours.

Artist King Krule, had planned to tour the U.S. and U.K. this spring upon his latest album release, “Man Alive!”. There was a show for April 4th in Austin, but was rescheduled for September due to the coronavirus.

I was planning on attending this concert with friends and integrating the experience to the blog.

Another favorite artist of mine, The Garden, was planning on touring as they also released their album “Kiss My Superbowl Ring”. The duo has also revealed that they will postpone concerts from their spring tour until next year.

What does this mean for Coffee Shop Talk?

Initially, this was going to be a blog for myself to meet people in a cafe and have a conversation. However, concerts and gatherings altogether have been cancelled.

Concert reviews will be postponed, but I am still planning on interviews online and album reviews until further notice.

It is unfortunate that things are this way, however, I am doing my best to work around the quarantine for mine and everyone else’s safety.

Moving forward

I want to thank all public and private health officials for their dedication to humanity in trying times. As they work endlessly to serve the greater good, we should all do our part in keeping ourselves clean and sanitized, engaging in social distancing, covering our mouths when we cough and being mindful when in public.

For any of you reading, stay safe and adhere to your local and federal governments for information regarding the coronavirus. The CDC has guidelines online for all of our safety on this page.
